This article talks about how four women from the highlands of Guatemala have worked hard and has kept the weaving tradition of the Mayans alive. By gaining almost one hundred years of experience, they use two strategies, the foot pedal loom and the back strap loom, to weave the fabric. Most of them learned the art of weaving at an early age, even at only twelve years old! One woman Lidia, has weaved to earn a living because when she was little weaving was the only respectable thing a woman could do to earn money. She still lives in her old village with her son and wants to someday have enough money to travel to new places around the world.
I think that this article shows how different the United States is from Guatemala just from this news article because not everything in Guatemala is centered around technology. The women are proud of their village and weaving techniques, not begging for money. People in the United States always want a higher class, more money, and more success when these women here are happy where they are in Guatemala. I think even if someone came to their village with a brand new sewing machine ready to use, they still wouldn't take it because they want to stay with the traditions of their ancestors, not try to make things easier on them.
This article ties to the Guatemalan culture because it shows how a group of people live and what they do for a living. The Mayan weavers have kept their traditions for many years and the fabric they make is just one cultural trait of the Mayans in Guatemala. It says in the article that they still live in small villages and have not suppresed to the globalization of the world outside. I love this because these woman have stayed with the culture that their ancestors founded and still believe in the Mayan weaving techniques which shows how much they practice their culture's ways.
