This newspaper article was about how the Puerto de Ideas festival brought eighteen thousand people, including renouned scientists and writers, to talk about the effects of modernity, creativity, and culture on Chile. The festival offered lots of classes and artistic events in which different speakers talked about their point of view on society and culture in their country. One journalist, Gatston Soublet, explained why he thinks Chile is slipping away. With all this new technology coming in, it has pushed aside the Chilean folk wisdom, Mapuche myths, and has made us slaves to technology. Another writer, Eduardo Punset, thought the opposite. He said that he thinks in the next thirty years, creativity will be come very important and people will have to develop an array of skills to get a job, not specialize in one genre. Paolo Giordano has a unique perspective because he graduated with a doctrine in theoretical physics, but over time he realized what he was learning was not worth anything and now he is a writer. He talked about his second novel, "The Human Body", and how it relates to this stage in his life, and about how all of is books have a deeper meaning.
I think this festival is really interesting and I would love to go and visit one day. The speakers all had different point of views but they all were simular in the fact that everyone there cared about the culture and future of Chile. The Puerto de Ideas Festival is only on its third year, and they already have internationally famous speakers and writers come to talk about their ideas and thoughts on Chile. I personally like Eduardo Punset's point of view because he thought social media has brought innovation to society and that creativity will become a requirement in job interviews. I think this festival is a really good idea, and they should have a festival like this in the United States.
This article ties to Chilean culture because it specifically talks about the future for the culture and the effects of technology and modernity on the culture. It basically centers around culture! The festival poses questions about how the people should live, and how things should change. For example, its hard to balance improving technology with also not straying from the traditions that people there have practiced for thousands of years. Culture plays a big part in this festival because without it Soublet, Punset, and Giordano would have nothing to talk about!
